Flywheel Partners with Dr. Brian Wandell

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota—Flywheel Exchange, LLC announced that it will partner with Dr. Brian Wandell of Stanford University to commercialize his Scientific Data Management (SDM) software, a SaaS platform for scientists and researchers to manage their data and algorithms.

Collaboration is the future of scientific discovery, yet the current data management systems lack infrastructure to fully facilitate such collaboration. Flywheel and the SDM Project together are creating a scientific data management system that simplifies the capture, organization, storage, and distribution of scientific data. By allowing scientists to concentrate on the science, not the IT, this software will empower scientists to do great work together.

Brian Wandell stated: “SDM is designed to extend conventional database tools. In particular, we designed SDM to be helpful throughout the project, as opposed to just at the end. At the beginning, the SDM tools help students organize and easily re-organize the data as the project develops.  In addition, SDM supports the use and sharing of the most advanced computational tools, making it easy for investigators to share best practices in data management and computational techniques. Third, SDM helps the user throughout the scientific process. The PI manages data and computations flexibly through the lifespan of the project, from restricted access at the beginning to open sharing of data and computations at the end. The SDM helps PIs practice reproducible research in their lab.”

Troy Kopischke, CEO and Co-Founder stated: “I am excited about this partnership because we are building a platform that will allow some of the best scientific minds in this world to focus on the things they’re good at. It currently takes ten years for great discoveries to hit the marketplace due to the lack of tools to manage, share, and analyze data efficiently and effectively. Flywheel is the researcher’s tool, transforming the scientific process to accelerate scientific discovery.”

Flywheel will present this software at the Organization for Human Brain Mapping taking place at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu, June 14th to June 18th, 2015. Flywheel will be exhibiting at booth #212.
